Yup, it's exactly what it sounds like. Each month I'll be breaking down a different dish and how I styled it. As a subscriber you'll get an exclusive breakdown of each step along the way and helpful tips that Iearnt when making the mistakes I did!

I hope for it to be a community for creatives to share and learn our experiences with styling as a food photographer. It "officially" launches next month - hope to see you there!

Top 3 food styling tips from Narroway Studio's food photography workshop

I was full of butterflies on my way to the first day of the workshop. Meeting two of my creative heroes, photographer Issy Croker and food stylist Emily Ezekiel for a two day food photography and styling workshop in their studio - to say I was buzzing was an understatement.

The first hands on shoot and styling was bircher muesli with roast apricots.

Issy showed how to live tether to Capture One and then Emily demonstrated some food styling principles.

One of the main reasons I joined the workshop was to improve my food styling skills. So you can imagine I was super excited to see Emily's demo.

Here are Emily's top 3 food styling tips:

  1. Put yourself in your character's shoes, literally
If you're styling a dinner it means sitting where you have the table setting. If it's a cocktail party, stand next to the bar table. Styling from the physical position of your character helps you get the most natural look for the camera - crumbs, spills and all.
  2. Fill your bowls to different levels
This creates interest and makes the scene look more realistic. Adding different toppings/amounts/garnishes to each dish makes the scene feel real - some people eat faster/messier than others, it makes sense!
  3. Don't be afraid to start again
Watching Emily work was inspiring. The way she styled with confidence and intention is something I strive towards. That said, when something just isn't working no matter what you've tried, Emily advised just to start again. This was an important learning for me personally, as someone who can be very precious about my work.

P.S. that's not to say the food needs to go to waste! I wrote a whole blog post about reducing food waste when photographing food which you might find useful.
